Wilson Wood woke up with a mystery. The mystery took a form most men would love, a shapely blonde in his bed. Who is she and how did she get there? Solving this riddle should be a snap for an experienced news reporter like Wilson Wood. He is a sports reporter for the Gulf City newspaper and is best known for his coverage of the local fight
scene. But truth be told, Wilson is not much of a reporter, preferring to chase skirts instead of stories. That is a shame, because he is about to find himself in the middle of a much bigger mystery – the murder of Rocket Richards, an aging boxer who fought on
last night's card. With much reluctance, Wilson is cajoled into following the few available clues to find out who killed the Rocket. Along the way, he gets a glimpse of the dark side of Gulf City and uncovers more than he bargained for.

I didn’t know what to expect when I picked this book up. Then I found I couldn’t put it down. The story is engaging and the author clearly has a deep background in the the book’s setting and boxing. I loved the characters, especially the protagonist. Mr. Long created someone we can all relate too with the strengths and weaknesses of a real person. I wish someone would make a movie of this.

Down for the Count A Gulf City Saga eBook Lynn Long Reviews

Kept my interest through the complete book. There was enough depth in the characters and some unexpected turns that really kept my interest. The story line was period accurate including the gulf city it was set in. The characters interesting point of view helped keep mE reading the entire Book. Well done Lynn Long.
Wilson Wood, the hero of this story, is a former boxer turned reporter. He gave up fighting because he was tired of being beaten like a rug in boxing ring. However, he starts investigating the mysterious death of a boxer and finds himself in dangerous situations where again he is beaten like a rug, only this time there's no referee to stop the fight. Fortunately, Wood is quick witted and capable although he does show a weakness for booze and broads. The story, set in a Texas Gulf Coast town that strongly resembles Galveston in the Forties, is fast moving and gritty. It is very compelling with a healthy dose of dry humor. I thoroughly recommend it.
A fun read that made me put aside a lot of other things I was working on at the same time until I could finish it. The author brings us into the world of boxing and the world of the 1950's Gulf coast society. Lynn Long is an excellent writer. Almost every page brings an interesting or surprising twist or comment. Full disclosure I was comped the book by the author, who I met on a business trip; but I have no other association with him.
Excellent book. Hope the author continues to write more books.
This book takes a clever approach to an interesting story. Once you start - there's no putting it down! I am hoping for more books from this new author!
An atmospheric noir novel set in the 1950s on the Gulf Coast which reminded me of Raymond Chandler. I am looking forward to a sequel.
This book has a great plot and flows well. I would have given it at least 4 stars but for the editing. Few if any misspelled words and punctuation was good, but words in sentences were out of position and sometimes left out. For instance, "How could I get you take a message back to shore for me?" These errors were made often enough to be distracting when reading the book. With a little editing effort, it could be a better read.
